Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final part of Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, out Apr 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with 24 hours of early access for the Premium editions. It opens the whole planet from the Highwind, makes Vincent and Cid playable and adds the FITS job system. This viki covers its release, editions, platforms, story, characters, combat, world and DLC, the story of Remake and Rebirth so far, and every Final Fantasy VII game since 1997, and says plainly what is not yet known.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the last game of Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy: an action RPG in which Cloud and his friends fly the airship Highwind across the whole planet to stop Sephiroth and the Meteor he has called down. It comes out on Apr 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC), all on the same day, the first time a game of the trilogy has launched everywhere at once. The Standard Edition costs $69.99. In the Deep Dive trailer's combat at this moment, Cid and Yuffie fight side by side and trigger one of the synergy attacks the series is known for, a fair picture of how the game plays: real-time action you can pause into Tactical Mode, with a party of eight to switch between. This page is the map of the viki: each section below says the essentials and links the page that answers the question in full.

Cloud stands at the center with his sword, Aerith prays at the left, Zack holds a large sword at the right and Sephiroth floats above them, with Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie and other party members around them in a wide sky of gray and white clouds.

What is Final Fantasy VII Revelation?

It is the conclusion of the remake of Final Fantasy VII (1997) that Square Enix split into three full games. Square Enix's own summary puts it in one line: the hybrid battle system "established in REMAKE and refined in REBIRTH is perfected in REVELATION". The world is now one connected planet, and the game covers the part of the 1997 story that begins after the party loses a beloved ally, with Sephiroth "nearing godhood" and Meteor in the sky, as the Sep 3, 2026 announcement puts it. The full premise is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Story, and the plot of the first two games is on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.

When Hamaguchi revealed the game at Summer Game Fest on Jun 5, 2026, he named its theme: "The central theme of this title is resolve." Each character confronts their own destiny on the way to the final battle, and he described his own resolve to see the series through to its end. Who made it, and what the team has said since, is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Developers.

When does it come out, and on what?

Apr 8, 2027, on every platform. Nintendo's Sep 9, 2026 Direct put the Switch 2 version on the same day and opened digital pre-orders on the eShop later that day, six days after pre-orders opened everywhere else (boxed Switch 2 copies could already be ordered). Premium and Premium Plus owners start a day earlier, on Apr 7; Steam lists that early access from 14:00 UTC. Square Enix has not announced a launch hour, and the two stores' own data differ: the hours and how to read them are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Release Date.

The game is on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with no PS4 or Xbox One version. PC requirements still read "TBD" on Steam as of Nov 7, 2026, and the install is expected to be large: Hamaguchi said "around 200GB", and every physical copy needs an extra download. Details are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Platforms and File Size and, for Nintendo's console, Final Fantasy VII Revelation Switch 2.

A tour of the game

The world. Square Enix calls it "our most expansive open world yet", from the outskirts of Midgar to the Mideel Archipelago and the warrior nation of Wutai. You fly the Highwind in real time and jump out with a parachute wherever you want to land. The regions are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map, the airship on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Highwind, and Yuffie's homeland on Wutai.

Why a parachute. Hamaguchi told IGN's second previewer that in the 1997 game the Highwind could land anywhere, which was not a real option in a high-fidelity world, so the team looked at Fortnite, where modern players already know the idea of dropping from the sky. In our view it is the right call: it keeps the 1997 freedom without a landing animation every time.

Piko. A chocobo companion grows with you: it sprints, glides and flies, and fights beside you until you dismount. See Piko the Chocobo.

FITS. Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear gives each character one of four outfits (Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, Summoner), each a new moveset; Vincent's Summoner outfit lets him attack together with the creature he calls. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation FITS System and, for the rest of the battle system, Final Fantasy VII Revelation Combat.

Two new party members. Vincent Valentine, a gunslinger and former Turk who turns into the Galian Beast "at the press of a button", and Cid Highwind with his lance are playable for the first time in the trilogy, making a party of eight. Their pages: Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Cid Highwind in Final Fantasy VII Revelation; everyone else is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Characters, and the actors on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Voice Cast.

The Weapons. "The planet itself has unleashed its last line of defense": giant creatures that attack anything, the party included. Ruby, Emerald, Ultima and Sapphire have been shown; see Final Fantasy VII Revelation Weapons, and for every other foe Final Fantasy VII Revelation Enemies and Bosses.

Side quests that change with the character. The odd job you take plays out differently depending on who takes it, and the Deep Dive shows a Gongaga quest told from Vincent's side. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests, plus Queen's Blood in Final Fantasy VII Revelation (Red XIII gets a new card saga) and Final Fantasy VII Revelation Minigames (the Gold Saucer, snowboarding and chocobo racing return). How long all of it takes, and the difficulty options, are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Length and Difficulty.

What previewers worried about. IGN's Michael Higham loved the combat but found that Chadley's assistant MAI kept interrupting him with optional activities the moment he landed somewhere new. Every hands-on report and event demo is gathered on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Previews; the trailers, each with its own moment, are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Trailers.

The Story Expansion Pass

Two paid story expansions were announced on Sep 3, 2026: Story DLC 1, "Sephiroth", and Story DLC 2, "Vincent & the Turks", planned between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028 (Steam). Sephiroth, heard at this point of the reveal trailer telling Cloud "Let us put your faith to the test", gets the first. Hamaguchi compared both to INTERmission, Yuffie's episode for Remake. What is known, and what is not, is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC, and the man himself on Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

From 1997 to Revelation

Matt Mercer, the voice of Vincent, told TV Insider at New York Comic Con that the remake series represents "the culmination of the old school games" that inspired so many people to make games. The road there, in short (every game has its page; the order to play them is on Final Fantasy VII Games in Order):

Date Release
Jan 31, 1997 Final Fantasy VII (1997) on PlayStation, in Japan
2004 to 2006 Before Crisis, Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus: the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII

Apr 10, 2020 Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4, the trilogy's first part
Jun 10, 2021 Remake Intergrade with INTERmission on PS5
Sep 7, 2023 Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis on mobile
Feb 29, 2024 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PS5, the second part
Jun 3, 2026 Rebirth on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S
Jun 5, 2026 Revelation revealed at Summer Game Fest, for Spring 2027
Sep 3, 2026 Dated Apr 8, 2027 at State of Play; pre-orders open
Apr 8, 2027 Final Fantasy VII Revelation on every platform

Sources: RPG Site, Jun 7, 2026 (the 1997 date); RPG Site, Feb 5, 2026 (Rebirth's ports); Kotaku, Jun 5, 2026 (the reveal); PlayStation Blog, Sep 3, 2026 (the date). The other dates are sourced on each game's page.

Revelation lands in the 30th anniversary year of the original, which came out in Japan on Jan 31, 1997. The reveal trailer ends on the line "At last, the promise is fulfilled. The journey ends here."

What we think

  • We think Ruby and Emerald Weapon return as optional superbosses after the main story, as they were in 1997, and that the Weapons seen roaming the open world before then are fights you can lose rather than scripted set pieces.
  • We think the "Sephiroth" story DLC is set in the past, around the Nibelheim incident, since Hamaguchi compared both expansions to INTERmission and would not say whether they take place "in the past or the present".
  • We think Square Enix shows Revelation again at The Game Awards in December 2026 and announces a public demo there, as both Remake and Rebirth had one before launch. More of our predictions

Frequently asked questions

When does Final Fantasy VII Revelation come out?

On Apr 8, 2027 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Premium and Premium Plus editions unlock 24 hours early, on Apr 7. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation Release Date.

Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation the last game?

Yes. Square Enix calls it the conclusion of the remake series, and Kitase said on Jun 5, 2026 that the series is "finally reaching its climactic finale". Two story DLCs follow it, but no fourth game is announced.

Do I need to play Remake and Rebirth first?

Square Enix has not said Revelation requires them, but it continues their story directly and rewards their save data with two summons. Final Fantasy VII Games in Order says what to play, and the $84.99 Trilogy Edition is the cheapest way to own all three on PS5, Xbox and PC.

Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation open world?

Yes. The whole planet is one connected world that you fly over in the Highwind and parachute down onto without loading screens, though some places, such as Wutai's center, limit where you can land. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map.

Is it coming to Xbox and Switch 2 on day one?

Yes. For the first time in the trilogy every version launches together on Apr 8, 2027. The Switch 2 boxed copy is a game-key card. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation Switch 2.

How much does Final Fantasy VII Revelation cost?

$69.99 for the Standard Edition, $99.99 for Premium, $109.99 for Premium Plus and $349.99 for the Collector's Edition, as of Nov 7, 2026.

Characters

  • Cid Highwind in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Cid Highwind, the pilot of the airship Highwind, is playable for the first time in the remake series in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, as a lance-wielding dragoon and the party's aerial specialist: timed combos into Dragon Spin, Hyper Dive and Ground Pound, and a Target Spear (IGN calls it Mark Lance) that pins up to five spears to power his jumps. Hamaguchi says his final Limit Break ties into the Weapon battles and the Highwind.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Characters

Final Fantasy VII Revelation has a party of eight playable characters, with Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind playable for the first time in the remake series, alongside Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie and Cait Sith; Zack gets more playable segments, and Aerith's role is not announced. Godo, Glenn Lodbrok, Cissnei, Chadley and his assistant MAI lead the supporting cast.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Voice Cast

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's English cast is led by Cody Christian (Cloud), Britt Baron (Tifa), John Eric Bentley (Barret) and Briana White (Aerith), with Matt Mercer as Vincent, J. Michael Tatum as Cid and Caleb Pierce as Zack; the one change is Sephiroth, now voiced by Travis Willingham in place of Tyler Hoechlin. The cast said goodbye at a New York Comic Con panel on Oct 8, 2026.

  • Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Sephiroth is Final Fantasy VII Revelation's antagonist, "nearing godhood" after Rebirth and waiting for Cloud in the Whirlwind Maze at the start of the game; Travis Willingham voices him in English, replacing Tyler Hoechlin, whom director Naoki Hamaguchi said had scheduling conflicts. Story DLC 1 of the Story Expansion Pass is named "Sephiroth".

  • Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Vincent Valentine, a former Turk changed by Shinra's experiments, is playable for the first time in the remake series in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, fighting with pistols whose abilities grow with every hit and turning into the Galian Beast at will, at the cost of a Chaos meter that lowers his maximum HP. Square Enix promises new reveals about his past, and Story DLC 2 is "Vincent & the Turks".

DLC

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC

Final Fantasy VII Revelation has two paid story DLCs, Story DLC 1 "Sephiroth" and Story DLC 2 "Vincent & the Turks", planned between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028 and sold together as the Story Expansion Pass, which is included in the Premium, Premium Plus and Collector's Editions. Their stories, prices and dates are not announced as of Nov 7, 2026.

Enemies

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Enemies and Bosses

The bosses and enemies shown in Final Fantasy VII Revelation so far are Jenova Death (also written Jenova Deathmourner), the Tokyo Game Show demo's fire-and-tentacle boss, Gigas and Dragon Riders in the Whirlwind Maze, Malboros overrunning Gongaga, and tougher beasts in the Grasslands. A Knights of the Round storyline with a superboss-level fight has been teased. The Weapons have their own page.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Weapons

The Weapons are colossal guardians the planet awakens against Meteor, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation makes them its signature fights. Square Enix has named Ruby, Emerald and Ultima Weapon, the reveal trailer gives Sapphire Weapon long screen time, and a brand-new Weapon appears whose name has not been revealed. Some are optional endgame battles.

Gameplay

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Combat

Final Fantasy VII Revelation keeps the hybrid battle system of Remake and Rebirth, real-time action plus a Tactical Mode that pauses to spend ATB on spells, abilities and items, and adds two new fighters (Cid and Vincent), expanded synergies, the FITS outfits, and fighting from chocobo-back. Combat director Teruki Endo calls this entry "all about polish and increasing player freedom."

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation FITS System

FITS (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear) is Final Fantasy VII Revelation's job system: four outfits per character, Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner, each giving a new moveset and role, chosen on the Highwind. A character without one is a Freelancer, and the outfits change how a character fights, not, by early accounts, their stats.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Highwind

In Final Fantasy VII Revelation you fly Cid's airship, the Highwind, in real time over the whole planet from early in the game and parachute from its deck to land almost anywhere, with no loading. The ship is also the party's base, where you change FITS and meet Wize, Billy, Piko and Chadley.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Length and Difficulty

Director Naoki Hamaguchi puts Final Fantasy VII Revelation's main story at about 35 hours or more and a completionist run at 100 hours or more. Hard Mode can be chosen from the start, Classic Mode returns, minigames get difficulty settings and a skip, cutscenes can play at double speed, and an optional prompt raises your party to the story's recommended level.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Minigames

Final Fantasy VII Revelation brings back the Gold Saucer with snowboarding and chocobo racing, turns the Tifa and Scarlet slap fight into a minigame, adds a timed grapple race in Wutai and cat photography, and gives minigames difficulty settings and a skip. Queen's Blood returns too, on its own page.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's side quests are odd jobs taken from people around the world, all new even in returning regions, and the party member you send changes how a quest's story and gameplay unfold. MAI, Chadley's assistant, announces the world's activities; previews found her notifications intrusive.

  • Piko the Chocobo

Piko is the party's chocobo in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a mount that levels up with you, gains new abilities including high flight and an aerial dash, and fights at your side; you can attack from his back and dismount at any time. He lives aboard the Highwind with the chocobo farmer Billy.

  • Queen's Blood in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Queen's Blood, Rebirth's card game, returns in Final Fantasy VII Revelation with a new story saga led by Red XIII (Nanaki) instead of Cloud, opponents whose abilities change the rules mid-match, and a new trump card mechanic. Wize runs it from the Highwind, where you edit your deck.

Media

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Trailers

Square Enix has released six official Final Fantasy VII Revelation trailers as of Nov 7, 2026, from the Jun 5, 2026 Summer Game Fest reveal to the Sep 9 Nintendo Direct spot, about 22 minutes of footage in all. The 9:56 Combat and Exploration Deep Dive shows the most gameplay.

Overview

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final part of Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, an open-world action RPG coming on Apr 8, 2027 to PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC at once, from $69.99.

  • Predictions

We think Final Fantasy VII Revelation ends at the North Crater with Holy against Meteor but with Zack and Cloud's worlds brought together, and that its Sephiroth DLC retells Ever Crisis's First Soldier story with young Sephiroth playable.

Reception

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Previews

Press who played Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Gamescom, PAX West and Tokyo Game Show in 2026 praised its combat, Cid and Vincent, and the freedom of the Highwind, and worried about side-content clutter and constant interruptions from Chadley's assistant MAI. No public demo is announced as of Nov 7, 2026.

The Final Fantasy VII Revelation Collector's Edition costs $349.99, is sold only by the Square Enix Store in limited quantities, and adds a statue of Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth, the Story Expansion Pass and four in-game items to the Deluxe Edition, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Release Date

Final Fantasy VII Revelation comes out on Apr 8, 2027 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and the Premium and Premium Plus editions start 24 hours early on Apr 7. • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Switch 2

Series

  • Compilation of Final Fantasy VII

The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is Square Enix's set of spin-offs announced in 2003: Before Crisis (2004), the film Advent Children and the anime Last Order (2005), Dirge of Cerberus (2006) and Crisis Core (2007), later joined by The First Soldier and Ever Crisis. Hamaguchi says Revelation adds connections to all of them.

  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is Square Enix's Dec 13, 2022 remaster of the 2007 PSP prequel about Zack Fair, on PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox and PC, and on Nintendo Switch 2 since Sep 9, 2026. Its story ends where Final Fantasy VII begins, which makes it the most useful extra before Revelation.

  • Final Fantasy VII (1997)

Final Fantasy VII is Square's 1997 PlayStation RPG, out Jan 31, 1997 in Japan and Sep 7, 1997 in North America, later ported to PC, phones, PS4, Switch and Xbox One, and sold more than 15.1 million copies. Revelation remakes its final third.

  • Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis was a free-to-play retelling of the Final Fantasy VII story by Applibot and Square Enix, on iOS and Android from Sep 7, 2023 and Steam from Dec 2023, which ended service on Oct 6, 2026. Its new story about young Sephiroth, The First Soldier, is the likely source of Revelation's Sephiroth DLC.

  • Final Fantasy VII Games in Order

In release order the Final Fantasy VII games run from the 1997 original through Before Crisis, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, Remake, The First Soldier, Crisis Core Reunion, Ever Crisis and Rebirth to Revelation on Apr 8, 2027. Before Revelation you need Remake (or Intergrade) and Rebirth; everything else is optional.

  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second part of the remake trilogy, came out on PS5 on Feb 29, 2024, on PC on Jan 23, 2025 and on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on Jun 3, 2026. It scores 92 on Metacritic and won Best Score and Music at The Game Awards 2024; Square Enix has published no sales figure.

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake, the first part of the remake trilogy, came out on PS4 on Apr 10, 2020; its PS5 version Intergrade (Jun 10, 2021) adds Yuffie's INTERmission episode and later reached PC, Switch 2 and Xbox. It has sold more than 7 million copies.

Story

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far

Spoiler warning. Final Fantasy VII Remake follows Avalanche's war on Shinra in Midgar and ends with Cloud's party breaking "destiny" by defeating the Whispers; Rebirth crosses the world after Sephiroth, adds Yuffie, Cid and Vincent, and ends with Aerith killed by Sephiroth at the Forgotten Capital while other worlds, including one where Zack lives, press against theirs. Revelation begins after that.

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Story

Final Fantasy VII Revelation tells the last part of the remade Final Fantasy VII story, in which Cloud's party, grieving a friend and flying the Highwind, races to stop Meteor and a Sephiroth "nearing godhood" while the planet's Weapons attack everyone. As of Nov 7, 2026 Square Enix has shown the opening hours and an early chapter in Wutai, not the ending.

Studio

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation Developers

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is developed and published by Square Enix, directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, produced by Yoshinori Kitase, with Tetsuya Nomura as creative director and Teruki Endo leading combat. Yoshitaka Amano drew the logo, and Nomura and Roberto Ferrari designed the characters.

World

  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's world map is the whole planet as one seamless open world, flown by the Highwind airship with a parachute drop to any open spot. Square Enix has shown Wutai, the Mideel Archipelago, Rocket Town and the Northern Crater as new areas, and the Grasslands, Kalm, Junon, Gongaga, Costa del Sol and the Gold Saucer as returning ones, changed by Meteor and the Weapons.

  • Wutai

Wutai is Yuffie's homeland, the warrior nation that fought Shinra, and a new area in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, built as a large capital of tall vermilion buildings, cats and grappling points. In the press demo it hosts Yuffie's Chapter 4 quest, with her father Godo Kisaragi and Glenn Lodbrok, while tensions with Shinra are at a fever pitch.
