Piko the Chocobo
Piko is the party's chocobo in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a mount that levels up with you, gains new abilities including high flight and an aerial dash, and fights at your side; you can attack from his back and dismount at any time. He lives aboard the Highwind with the chocobo farmer Billy.
Piko is the chocobo of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the party's one steed for the whole planet, and he grows with you: "As you grow stronger, Piko will, too, as he supports you during your travels," says Square Enix's Combat and Exploration Deep Dive. He carries the party over land and through the air, rides into fights, and fights beside them, and you can jump off at any moment to fight on foot. Square Enix's press release sums him up as "Piko, the trusty Chocobo, who grows alongside the party". This page covers what he can do, how he fights, and where he lives; chocobo racing is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Minigames.

Who is Piko?
Piko is a single chocobo who goes everywhere with the party, rather than a different bird in each region. Game Informer's Wesley LeBlanc met him in the Gamescom demo: "Chocobo farmer Billy and his trusted chocobo Piko are now onboard as well", aboard the Highwind, which serves as the party's base. Square Enix has not said more about Piko's past as of Nov 7, 2026; the trailers show him only as a mount and a fighter. Who else is aboard the ship is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Highwind.
What can Piko do?
He covers ground the party cannot. The Deep Dive shows the party "zipping through the air on Chocoback" and "descending from the sky by parachute," and promises that "the entirety of the planet, from its peaks to its plains, is yours to traverse." The footage pairs the two ways down from the sky: the Highwind's parachute for arriving, Piko for moving across a region once you are on the ground.
Game Informer adds the specifics from the hands-on: chocobos in Revelation "can now fly much higher and have an aerial dash that lets you accelerate quickly while flying". Director Naoki Hamaguchi told Inven Global that the chocobo's abilities expand as the game goes on (Inven Global, Sep 10, 2026), which matches the Deep Dive's line that Piko grows stronger with you.
Vi.ki's list of Piko's abilities, as each source names them:
| Ability | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Grows with the party | New abilities unlock as you get stronger | Deep Dive; press release; Inven (Hamaguchi) |
| Travel through the air | "Zipping through the air on Chocoback" | Deep Dive |
| Flight | Fly "much higher" than chocobos in earlier games | Game Informer, Sep 10, 2026 |
| Aerial dash | Accelerate quickly while flying | Game Informer, Sep 10, 2026 |
| Mounted combat | Attack from his back | Deep Dive; Inven (Hamaguchi) |
| Dismount | Jump off at any time, including mid-fight | Deep Dive |
Square Enix has not said in what order these unlock, or whether flight is available from the start or only later; Hamaguchi's description suggests later.
Fighting with Piko
Piko is a fighter too. "In Revelation, your Chocobo isn't only your traveling companion, but your battle buddy, too," the Deep Dive says, and then shows him in action ("Let's see what Piko is capable of, shall we?") with a party member riding into a fight on his back.
You are never stuck on him. "During fights, you can dismount at any time to switch to a more traditional combat style," the narration goes on, before moving to FITS. So a fight can open on chocobo-back and finish on foot with the full battle system: Tactical Mode, synergies and Limit Breaks, all on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Combat.
Why add mounted combat at all? Hamaguchi told Inven it was added so that combat would not require dismounting, which he felt hurt the pacing of Rebirth, where riding into an enemy meant stopping to get off first. He was clear that it is not meant for fighting "extremely difficult enemies," so we expect Piko's attacks to be for field fodder, with bosses and Weapons fought on foot.
Piko in a side quest
GameRiot's hands-on footage, which its video chapters label a chocobo side quest, shows the party chasing a runaway the captions name Coconut, finding out she has fallen for someone, and setting out to help ("Let's go get your husband"). GameRiot's captions are a translation, so the in-game name may differ, and the footage does not make clear whether Piko himself takes part. What it shows is that chocobos are part of the odd jobs, not only of traversal.
The quest turns into a fight a few moments later ("Step back, Coconut. We'll figure this out." "Oh, you want to fight too?"), with the party's battle lines over it. How odd jobs work, and how they change with the character who takes them, is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests.
Piko and the chocobos of Remake and Rebirth
Chocobos have grown with the trilogy. Remake, set inside Midgar, had no rideable chocobo in its open areas; Rebirth made chocobos the way to cross its regions and gave each region's bird its own trick for that terrain. Revelation replaces that with one bird for the whole planet who learns the tricks over time, and adds the two things Rebirth's chocobos could not do: fly high and fight. Vi.ki's comparison, from Hamaguchi's remarks to Inven and the Deep Dive:
| Rebirth (2024) | Revelation (2027) | |
|---|---|---|
| Chocobos | Different birds by region, each with a terrain trick | One chocobo, Piko, who gains abilities |
| Flight | No free flight | Flies "much higher," with an aerial dash |
| Combat | Dismount to fight | Fight from his back; dismount any time |
| Where he lives | Chocobo stops in each region | Aboard the Highwind, with Billy |
What we think
We think Piko will be the most-used mount in the series, because Revelation's world is built around two layers: the Highwind for crossing between regions, and Piko for moving within them. The previews' biggest complaint about exploration was distance ("it takes time to get from point A to point B," said GameRiot), and Piko's flight is the answer to it once unlocked. We expect his full flight to be tied to story progress or a side-quest chain, as chocobo breeding was in 1997, which would also explain why Square Enix has described his growth but not shown his full range. We also expect a Piko outfit or color as a bonus item at some point, the most common kind of chocobo extra in the series. Our tracked calls are on Predictions.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation FITS SystemFITS (Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear) is Final Fantasy VII Revelation's job system: four outfits per character, Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner, each giving a new moveset and role, chosen on the Highwind. A character without one is a Freelancer, and the outfits change how a character fights, not, by early accounts, their stats.
