Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Vincent Valentine, a former Turk changed by Shinra's experiments, is playable for the first time in the remake series in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, fighting with pistols whose abilities grow with every hit and turning into the Galian Beast at will, at the cost of a Chaos meter that lowers his maximum HP. Square Enix promises new reveals about his past, and Story DLC 2 is "Vincent & the Turks".

Vincent Valentine is one of Final Fantasy VII Revelation's two new playable characters: "a deft gunslinger, capable of delivering precise, high-yield shots", a "secretive former Turk" who, as "the result of experimentation at the hands of Shinra", can transform into the Galian Beast "at the press of a button", in the words of Square Enix's Gameplay Introduction. He was met but not playable in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Kotaku, Jun 5, 2026). In Revelation he fights at range with pistols, switches freely into a clawed beast form whose only limit is a rising Chaos level, and pairs with Cid for synergy attacks. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has promised story reveals about his past "that people have never seen before", and the second Story DLC, "Vincent & the Turks", is his. Matt Mercer voices him (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Voice Cast).

Who is Vincent Valentine?

"Our newest coffin-dwelling companion," Matt Mercer called him on the Summer Game Fest stage on Jun 5, 2026, before Vincent's line from the trailer: "I won't return to my coffin until we've put Sephiroth in his." The coffin is the one in the Shinra Mansion basement at Nibelheim where the party finds him, in 1997 and in Rebirth.

Rebirth reworked that first meeting, IGN's Mar 2, 2024 video on its story changes explains: when the party reaches Hojo's old lab equipment, Vincent turns into the Galian Beast to stop them, then joins because of his past with Sephiroth and Shinra, "unfinished business". The fuller plot is on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.

Spoilers for the 1997 game and Dirge of Cerberus: in the original, Vincent was an optional character. A Turk assigned to guard the scientist Lucrecia, he was shot and experimented on by Hojo, the man who used Lucrecia's unborn child to make Sephiroth, and he sealed himself in the coffin in penance. His story continued in the 2006 game Dirge of Cerberus (Compilation of Final Fantasy VII).

What is new about Vincent's story?

Because Vincent "was only an optional character" in 1997, Hamaguchi said, the team "really focused" on fleshing out his story. The interview, from Gamescom in Aug 2026, plays in Curious Corduroy's Aug 28, 2026 video.

In a second Gamescom interview in the same video he went further: "in Revelation we go even deeper into his backstory and there'll be some new reveals about things that he did in the past and what made him as a character that people have never seen before." He also noted that, unlike Yuffie's Wutai, Vincent's hometown was never shown in the original. Curious Corduroy expects the main story to carry the essentials of his past, with Lucrecia and the rest in side quests; that is the creator's guess, not Square Enix's.

Side quests do change with him. In the Deep Dive's Gongaga odd job, once Vincent is chosen "this quest will unfold from his perspective", and he decides how the party searches for the missing youth coalition (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests).

How does Vincent play?

"Vincent is where Square Enix went all out on style," IGN's Michael Higham wrote after the Gamescom demo: dual pistol shots as his normal combo, capped with different moves depending on when you press Triangle, and the Galian Beast "as a normal ability as opposed to it being his first Limit Break like in the original", which turns him into "a melee powered onslaught with his own set of combos".

Sony's report from the Tokyo Game Show demo gives the buttons (PlayStation Blog, Sep 17, 2026), and Curious Corduroy reads it over the TGS footage in his Sep 17, 2026 video:

  • Square fires. There is no manual aiming.
  • Triangle fires his unique ability, which evolves from Blood Moon to Execration to Retribution as consecutive hits land, "increasing in power relative to the hit count".
  • Hold R1 to become the Galian Beast, which moves on all fours and slashes with claws; holding Triangle in that form staggers enemies faster.
  • Beast form is unlimited, but "as time passes, the Chaos level rises, reducing Vincent's maximum HP".

The names differ in the June trailer's menus. Final Fantasy Union's Jun 7, 2026 breakdown reads his special command switching between Eclipse, Execration, Retribution and Retribution Prime, abilities called Galian Blade, Reckoning and Focused Fire at one ATB bar each, and precision shots in the field to break crystals, much like Barret's in Rebirth. Square Enix may have renamed the first tier between builds; until launch we give both.

In beast form the special command becomes Diabolus Impact (the channel's reading), and a gauge appears beside his name. The channel took it for a timer, but Hamaguchi said there is no time limit, which the Chaos mechanic in the TGS build explains: the gauge measures cost, not time.

Is the Galian Beast worth it?

IGN's second previewer thought so. Vincent's Galian Beast form "absolutely rips through enemies", there is "no limit to how often you can swap back and forth", and it is "only balanced by the fact that staying in Galian Beast form for too long can reduce Vincent's max HP", which he "really didn't mind". He called Vincent "probably my favorite character to fight as in this series".

Hamaguchi framed it as the point of the character: in 1997 Vincent transformed only through Limit Breaks, but in Revelation he can "freely transform into his beast form whenever the player wants", switching from gunplay at range to close combat at once.

In our reading of the three sources, the right rhythm is short beast bursts during a stagger, then back to pistols to let the Retribution chain build again; the max HP loss makes long beast stretches a risk in boss fights where you cannot heal freely. That is our view from previews, not a tested strategy, and we will check it at launch.

What are Vincent's Limit Break and synergies?

According to the TGS notes of a player Curious Corduroy quotes, Vincent's Limit Break in that demo is Gates of Hell, and he has a synergy ability with Cloud. Square Enix has not listed either; treat the names as one player's report.

The Gameplay Introduction promises "high-impact synergies" when Vincent fights beside "a certain ace pilot", Cid (Cid Highwind in Final Fantasy VII Revelation), and the Deep Dive says the Rebirth synergy system "has been further expanded" with both newcomers (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Combat).

Which FITS does Vincent wear?

In the Deep Dive, "Vincent wears the Summoner, allowing him to perform synergized attacks with the entity invoked", and "his standard attacks become even deadlier and flashier". Selecting FITS again while a summon is out unleashes Pledge Roar, which costs HP (PlayStation Blog, Sep 17, 2026). In the Gamescom footage Square Enix gave the press, Curious Corduroy points out Vincent in Warrior, with Barret as a Knight and Cid as a Black Mage (his Sep 14, 2026 video). Every character can wear all four (Final Fantasy VII Revelation FITS System).

What is the Vincent DLC?

The Story Expansion Pass contains Story DLC 1, "Sephiroth", and Story DLC 2, "Vincent & the Turks", planned "between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028" (Square Enix, Sep 3, 2026). Nothing else about it is announced as of Nov 7, 2026. Prices and what creators expect are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC.

What does Matt Mercer say about Vincent?

Asked for a favorite line at New York Comic Con, one cast member picked Vincent's coffin line, "It's in the trailer, so I can say it", and noted the internet "went crazy over that". At the panel itself, Mercer said he worked on giving the stoic Vincent personality in battle, and his scenes with Yuffie drew laughs (Boss Rush Network, Oct 8, 2026).

What we think

We think "Vincent & the Turks" is set before or around Nibelheim, with Vincent as a young Turk guarding Lucrecia, and that it is where Square Enix puts the Dirge of Cerberus material (Deepground) that Hamaguchi would not confirm for the main game. Our reasons: the title pairs him with the Turks, whom he left long before the main story; Hamaguchi stressed "things that he did in the past"; and a DLC is the natural home for a prequel. We also think Vincent will be the most used character in the game's first month of play. Both can be checked when the DLC is detailed, expected by Winter 2027 (Predictions).

Frequently asked questions

Is Vincent playable in Final Fantasy VII Revelation?

Yes, as one of the eight party members, from early in the game: he was available from the start of both the Tokyo Game Show demo and the Chapter 4 demo at Gamescom.

Is Vincent optional in Revelation?

Square Enix has not said. He was optional in 1997; in Revelation he appears in the main party in every demo, and Hamaguchi describes expanding his story, which points to a required role.

Can Vincent stay in Galian Beast form forever?

There is no time limit, but the longer he stays, the higher the Chaos level rises and the lower his maximum HP goes.

Who voices Vincent?

Matt Mercer in English. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation Voice Cast.

Does Vincent have other transformations?

In 1997 his Limit Breaks turned him into the Galian Beast, Death Gigas, Hellmasker and Chaos. In Revelation only the Galian Beast has been shown, and the Chaos name lives on as the meter.
