Final Fantasy VII Revelation Switch 2

Final Fantasy VII Revelation comes to Nintendo Switch 2 on Apr 8, 2027, the same day as every other version, for $69.99. The boxed copy is a game-key card, the game needs at least 130 GB of free storage, and Nintendo eShop pre-orders opened on Sep 9, 2026.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on Apr 8, 2027, the same day as on PS5, Xbox and PC, as this Sep 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct segment says before announcing that eShop pre-orders "begin later today". The digital Standard Edition costs $69.99 on Nintendo's store, which estimates the download at 130.1 GB. The boxed version, on sale since Sep 3, is a game-key card: the cartridge holds a license, and the game downloads the first time you start it, with "at least 130 GB of available storage space" required. Square Enix has not said how the game runs on Switch 2 as of Nov 7, 2026; the best guide is how Remake and Rebirth run there, set out below.

Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation on Switch 2?

Yes, from day one. Hamaguchi announced at the Summer Game Fest reveal that Revelation was "launching simultaneously on all platforms", and Nintendo of America posted the reveal trailer for Switch 2 a week later, on Jun 12, 2026. It is the first game of the trilogy to reach a Nintendo console on launch day: Remake Intergrade arrived on Switch 2 almost six years after Remake, and Rebirth more than two years after its PS5 release. There is no version for the original Switch.

On Sep 3, 2026, when the date was announced, Switch 2 was the one platform without digital pre-orders: Square Enix's release said they would open "at a later date", while boxed Switch 2 copies could already be ordered. The Nintendo Direct of Sep 9 opened them, with a 45-second trailer of Switch 2 footage, as Final Weapon reported that day.

Is the Switch 2 physical version a game-key card?

Yes. The Square Enix Store states it plainly: "The physical version will be distributed as a Game-Key Card." The card is a key to the game rather than the game itself: on first launch the Switch 2 downloads the data, and the store requires an internet connection and "at least 130 GB of available storage space". The PS5 and Xbox boxes need a download too, so no console version of Revelation plays straight from the box (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Platforms and File Size).

We think it was the only realistic choice. Nintendo's largest Switch 2 cartridges are far smaller than the game, and a 130 GB title would need several. What it means in practice: the card still lets you lend or resell the game, but it is useless without a download, and if the eShop's servers ever close, the box will not install anything. Buy the boxed copy for the shelf or for resale, not for preservation.

How much space does it need on Switch 2?

At least 130 GB, by Square Enix's figure, and Nintendo's page estimates 130.1 GB. That is far less than the "around 200GB" Hamaguchi expects elsewhere (RPG Site, Sep 18, 2026), which we read as smaller textures and assets for the Switch 2 version, as is usual for its ports; Square Enix has not explained the difference.

The Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, so the game alone takes about half of it. Our practical advice: if you also keep Remake Intergrade or Rebirth on the console, or other large games, plan on a microSD Express card, the only kind of memory card Switch 2 games can run from, and set it up before launch day so the download can start the moment the game unlocks.

How will it run? What Remake and Rebirth show

Revelation reuses the world of Rebirth: IGN's second previewer flew over "some of the earliest areas from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to see how they changed". That makes Rebirth's Switch 2 version, released on Jun 3, 2026, the closest guide we have. Notebookcheck's summary of the reviews and of Digital Foundry's analysis (Jun 2, 2026) found:

Rebirth on Switch 2 (as reported Jun 2, 2026)
Frame rate Targets 30 fps, closer to it than the demo, with drops into the 20s in intense battles
Docked DLSS upscaling, from 540p up to 1080p
Handheld Targets 576p, with the cuts more visible
Cuts Soft textures, fewer NPCs and less foliage, shorter draw distances, frequent pop-in
Metacritic 86 on Switch 2, against 92 on PS5

Remake Intergrade, the smaller game, scored 89 on Switch 2 on Metacritic, the same as on PS5. The pattern: the trilogy runs on Switch 2 with visible cuts and a 30 fps target, and the busier the world, the bigger the cuts.

Revelation asks more than Rebirth did. IGN's Michael Higham, describing footage Square Enix recorded on another platform, found flying the Highwind and dropping anywhere on the map seamless "without visible loading", with some level-of-detail pop-in. A whole planet streamed without loading screens is the hardest thing for a handheld to do.

We expect Revelation on Switch 2 to target 30 fps with dynamic resolution like Rebirth, with lower detail when flying the Highwind than on the ground, and we expect Square Enix to show the Switch 2 version running before launch rather than leave it to day-one reviews. Hamaguchi has pleaded with doubters to "just believe us" that the game runs on low-spec hardware, and RPG Site presumed he meant Switch 2 among others (Oct 1, 2026). We will check both by the Apr 8, 2027 launch.

What is in the Switch 2 version?

The whole game. Nothing official says any content is cut on Switch 2: the same "most expansive open world yet", from the outskirts of Midgar to the Mideel Archipelago and Wutai, the same eight playable characters, and the same Story Expansion Pass in the digital Premium and Premium Plus Editions and the boxed Collector's Edition. Nintendo's US store page lists one product, the digital game, as of Nov 7, 2026.

One edition is missing: the $84.99 Remake Series Trilogy Edition is sold only on PS5, Xbox and PC. Switch 2 owners who want the first two games buy them separately; Remake Intergrade and Rebirth have both been on Switch 2 since 2026 (RPG Site, Feb 5, 2026). The save-data bonuses from those games work on the same console with the same account. All editions and bonuses are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Editions and Price.

Should you buy it on Switch 2 or elsewhere?

No preview has shown the Switch 2 version: IGN, for example, notes at this point that it could not capture its own play and that the footage came from Square Enix, and of the previews on this viki only GameRiot names its platform, PS5. In our view, if you own both a Switch 2 and a PS5, Xbox Series X or capable PC, buy it on the bigger machine: Rebirth's port shows what the handheld gives up. If Switch 2 is your only console, or you want the game in handheld form, the port is the whole game, and Remake Intergrade's and Rebirth's Switch 2 versions suggest a playable, if softer, 30 fps experience. Wait for reviews of the Switch 2 version if you can, since the game-key card means you lose nothing by not buying a box on day one.
