Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's world map is the whole planet as one seamless open world, flown by the Highwind airship with a parachute drop to any open spot. Square Enix has shown Wutai, the Mideel Archipelago, Rocket Town and the Northern Crater as new areas, and the Grasslands, Kalm, Junon, Gongaga, Costa del Sol and the Gold Saucer as returning ones, changed by Meteor and the Weapons.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's map is the entire planet, one seamlessly connected open world that Square Enix calls its "most expansive open world yet", crossed in real time aboard the Highwind. In Square Enix's own words, the entire planet is freely explorable and you can parachute in "anywhere". Unlike Rebirth, which opened its world region by region, Revelation hands you the airship early in the game. No map size in square kilometers and no region count has been published as of Nov 7, 2026; what follows is every place Square Enix and the press who played it have named.

Quick facts

Structure One seamless open world, the whole planet
Main travel The Highwind, flown in real time, then a parachute drop
On the ground Piko the chocobo (sprint, glide, fly), a grappling gun, fast travel to visited places
New areas shown Wutai, Mideel Archipelago, Rocket Town, Northern Crater (Whirlwind Maze)
Returning areas shown Grasslands, Kalm, Junon, Gongaga, Costa del Sol, Gold Saucer, Midgar's outskirts, Nibel
Confirmed absent Bone Village (Hamaguchi, Jun 7, 2026)
Underwater Submarine scenes and an Emerald Weapon fight; no free ocean-floor exploration reported
Region count, map size Not announced as of Nov 7, 2026

How big is the Final Fantasy VII Revelation map?

Big enough that Square Enix built its travel around flying over it. The Gameplay Introduction of Jun 5, 2026 says that "at any moment in the open world" you can pilot the Highwind to a destination and jump, descending seamlessly to the ground. The official Deep Dive of Sep 3, 2026 calls it "a wide-open world realized on an unprecedented scale", and the PlayStation Blog repeats that line.

The people who played it agree on the scale, if not on a number. GameRiot, after an hour on PS5 in London, said every location felt huge even from the airship, that it takes time to get from point A to point B, and that each zone carries its own completion percentage. A Square Enix representative told CGMagazine that the Chapter 4 slice in the Gamescom demo alone normally holds 15 to 20 hours of content.

We think the per-zone completion figure is the closest thing to a size measure players will get before launch: Rebirth also tracked each region separately, so counting Revelation's zones on day one will say more than any square-kilometer claim.

Every region shown so far

This table puts together every place the official videos and the press previews have named. "New" means a place the remake series has not built before.

Place New or returning What has been shown Source
Wutai New The capital, its cats, rooftop grappling, a no-landing zone Deep Dive, IGN
Mideel Archipelago New "a lush tropical rainforest characterized by sweltering humidity", hot springs town RPG Site, CGMagazine
Rocket Town New Named in the Deep Dive; moved into Revelation for pacing Inven Global
Northern Crater, Whirlwind Maze New The Tokyo Game Show demo's setting PlayStation Blog
Grasslands Returning Bigger, harder monsters; new side quests IGN
Kalm Returning Taking in refugees IGN
Junon Returning Reachable by Highwind Game Informer
Gongaga Returning Malboros overrun the jungle; Regina is back Deep Dive, Game Informer
Costa del Sol Returning Vendors selling "meteor" souvenirs GameRiot
Gold Saucer Returning A side story, snowboarding, chocobo racing Game Informer
Desert outside the Gold Saucer Returning Ruby Weapon roams it IGN
Nibel Returning Named in the Gamescom demo Game Informer
North Wood, Temple of the Ancients Returning Can be revisited RPG Site interview
Midgar Returning (outskirts) You cannot skydive into the city itself in the demo IGN

In the 1997 game, the final disc also sent the party to the Icicle area, the Great Glacier and the sea floor. An icy section is confirmed: Hamaguchi told Shacknews there is "a section of the game where you have to move through a very cold place", which Shacknews ties to the original's Great Glacier. The Outer Haven's PAX West preview names an "Icicle Frostbelt" area; Square Enix has not used that name in its own material.

How have the old regions changed after Meteor?

Revelation reuses Rebirth's continents but not Rebirth's maps. In IGN's second preview, Kalm is taking in an influx of refugees, and the Grasslands, once a gentle starter zone full of weak enemies, now have "hulking evil beasts" roaming them.

Hamaguchi gave IGN the reason: the approaching Meteor caused seismic shifts in familiar places, which changed their geography, and every side quest in those areas is new as well.

In Curious Corduroy's Sep 11, 2026 roundup of that day's interviews, he reads out Hamaguchi's answer to Game Informer: with Meteor in the sky and the Weapons rampaging, some areas are now flooded where they were dry before, and the land the Weapons attacked is scarred and destroyed. Game Informer's own preview says the same: Weapons have flooded some areas and scarred the land. CGMagazine went as far as calling the old places "functionally brand-new".

How do you get around?

Mostly by air. The Deep Dive shows the party taking the Highwind from the open sea to Wutai and says you gain control of the airship "early in the game", with "complete freedom to travel where you want, when you want". The ship itself, its crew and its upgrades are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Highwind.

The parachute exists because the old way would not work. Hamaguchi told IGN that the 1997 Highwind could land anywhere on the world map, which was not a real option in a high-fidelity open world, so the team borrowed the parachute from Fortnite, whose players were already used to dropping in from the sky.

IGN's Michael Higham found the drop seamless, with no visible loading from the deck to the ground, only some level-of-detail pop-in, and called the parachute a better solution than landing the airship somewhere arbitrary.

On the ground, a new grappling gun pulls you up to highlighted points, which IGN says limits it to marked spots but makes dense towns like Wutai much faster. Every place you have visited becomes a fast travel point, and the Deep Dive uses one to jump to Gongaga. The chocobo is the other half of travel, with sprint, glide, flight and a new aerial dash, covered on Piko the Chocobo.

Where can't you land?

Not everywhere is open from the sky. IGN's second preview found that some parts of a region block free landing, Wutai among them, and that a skydive into Midgar failed. CGMagazine ran into an invisible wall when it tried to reach Ruby Weapon. Many regions could be explored at will in the demo, but the story moved only once the party reached Wutai.

Is there underwater exploration?

Not as free roaming, by the best account so far. In the same Curious Corduroy roundup, he reads a Japanese interview (he says he does not know the outlet) in which Hamaguchi says submarines exist, but exploring the ocean floor on the world map was left out because the surface map is already huge; instead, battles with Emerald Weapon by submarine are part of the main story. The Gamescom trailer did show the party inside a submarine and an underwater combat section. Until Square Enix says it in its own material, treat the "no ocean floor" part as reported, not confirmed. The Weapon itself is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Weapons.

Can you turn off the map icons?

Partly. Reading Hamaguchi's interview with RPG Site's Josh Torres, Curious Corduroy relays that there are plans to let you switch off the icons shown while flying the Highwind, for players who want to look at the world, and that a priority option already lets you push one kind of content, Queen's Blood for example, to the front of the map. There is no filter that hides all but one type. Previews complained about the clutter: IGN's Higham saw a map "littered" with side activities, and IGN's second-take preview counted around a dozen pings on landing in the Grasslands.

We think the icon toggle is the most important map feature for anyone who disliked Rebirth's checklists, and we expect Square Enix to show it before launch, because the clutter was the most repeated complaint in the September previews. How the side content itself works is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests.

Frequently asked questions

Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation open world?

Yes. Square Enix describes it as one seamlessly connected open world covering the whole planet, explored by airship, parachute, chocobo and on foot.

Can you go back to Midgar?

You can fly over Midgar's outskirts, but in the press demo the city itself could not be entered by skydiving. Whether a later chapter returns to Midgar has not been said.

Does Revelation keep Rebirth's regions?

It keeps the places (the Grasslands, Junon, Gongaga, Costa del Sol, the Gold Saucer and more) but changes them: Hamaguchi says Meteor shifted the land, some areas are flooded, and every side quest there is new.

Is Bone Village in the game?

No. Hamaguchi told RPG Site that Bone Village is not in Revelation, while North Wood and the Temple of the Ancients can be revisited.

How many regions are there?

Square Enix has not published a count as of Nov 7, 2026. The list above is everything shown.
