Final Fantasy VII Revelation Previews
Press who played Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Gamescom, PAX West and Tokyo Game Show in 2026 praised its combat, Cid and Vincent, and the freedom of the Highwind, and worried about side-content clutter and constant interruptions from Chadley's assistant MAI. No public demo is announced as of Nov 7, 2026.
The first hands-on previews of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, published on Sep 10, 2026, agree on two things: the combat, now with Cid and Vincent, is as good as the series has been, and the open world risks drowning in side content and notifications. IGN's Michael Higham called his hour "pretty overwhelming," praised what he named his "absolute favorite action RPG combat to date," and worried that the game is "stuffing its world with side content for the sake of it." Every preview so far comes from event demos for press and fans; as of Nov 7, 2026 there is no public demo. This page collects who played what, where, and what they said. Reviews will replace it at launch on Apr 8, 2027.

Which demos have been shown?
Gamescom (late Aug 2026). The first press demo dropped players into Chapter 4, where "Yuffie and the gang need to head to Wutai" and Cloud and Tifa are not in the party. Most of the world was open from the start through the Highwind, so players split their time between optional fights, flying, and Yuffie's story in Wutai. IGN's Higham had about an hour; IGN's second-take preview, from the same build, had two. The embargo for these previews lifted on Sep 10, 2026.
PAX West (Sep 5, 2026). Square Enix held a panel and a hands-on area in Seattle; The Outer Haven's hands-on preview comes from it.
Tokyo Game Show (Sep 17 to 21, 2026). A new, combat-focused demo: the special chapter "The Party Assembles," at level 36, chasing Sephiroth through the Whirlwind Maze with Cloud, Cid, Vincent and Barret, ending in a boss fight with Jenova. The PlayStation Blog's Sachie Kobari wrote a hands-on report and RPGFan's Matt Wardell played it too (RPGFan, Sep 21, 2026). The boss is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Enemies and Bosses.
New York Comic Con (Oct 8, 2026). No playable demo, but the English cast's panel "One Last Ride" showed footage of the final recording sessions. Mid-October also brought a second wave of previews of the game's opening, among them GameSpot's video "FF7 Revelation's Opening Invites Deeply Intriguing Questions About The Trilogy's Conclusion" (Oct 16, 2026).
Is there a Final Fantasy VII Revelation demo?
Not for the public, as of Nov 7, 2026. Every demo above ran only at events or for invited press. Remake and Rebirth both released a free demo on PlayStation before launch, so we expect Revelation to get one in the weeks before Apr 8, 2027, very likely the opening chapter rather than the Gamescom open-world slice, which drops players into the middle of the story. We think a demo on all four platforms at once is the likeliest form, since the game itself launches on all of them together. That call, with its check date, is on Predictions.

What did previewers like?
The combat, and Cid and Vincent in it. Higham spent his first minutes in "a few high-level battles with Cid and Vincent in the party" in the Mideel Archipelago, and after a few fights asked himself why he would ever swap them out. He notes that the footage IGN shows was recorded by Square Enix and sent for coverage, which is true of every video preview on this page. Game Informer's LeBlanc expects Cid to be "a crucial member" of his party. At TGS, RPGFan's Wardell put the battle system between "the mashiness of Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy XV" and the forethought of turn-based Final Fantasy. The system itself is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Combat.
Freedom. IGN's second-take preview, from a two-hour session in the same build, ends on what it liked most: in two hours it flew, revisited old areas, grappled around a new one, and found a favorite character, and it felt "highly flexible right out of the gate." Its hope is that the whole game feels as open as that slice. Chapter 4 already gave six playable characters.
Flying and landing. Higham found it "impressive how seamless it is flying around in the Highwind and dropping into any part of the map without visible loading," with some level-of-detail pop-in he did not mind. He had thought parachuting looked silly, and came round to it as better than landing the airship anywhere on the map. See Final Fantasy VII Revelation Highwind.
Familiarity, and scale. GameRiot played for about an hour on PS5 in London, without Cloud or Tifa. Its verdict: if you played Rebirth, "it will feel like home," like "returning to an old, old friend," while every location feels "absolutely huge" and "it takes time to get from point A to point B." It also noticed that each zone has a completion percentage.
What worried previewers?
MAI. Chadley's assistant was the most criticized thing in the Gamescom build. Higham says MAI would "incessantly bang my line" about optional activities, interrupting him the moment he landed in Wutai, then covering the map with markers and the screen corner with minor objectives. "Why are you telling me about this now?" Game Informer's LeBlanc found her notifications "terribly intrusive", and noted that Chadley himself, now "busy tracking down Weapons," is heard less.
Higham counts "maybe 10 to 15 minutes worth of notifications, pop-ups, tutorials, and interruptions" in his hour. He grants that many were tutorials that would come much earlier in the full game, since the demo started at Chapter 4, and asks Square Enix only to "rein those things in at key moments."
Side-content clutter. IGN's second preview landed in the Grasslands and was "met with probably around a dozen pings" pointing at side objectives, which brought back how "checklisty side content and mandatory mini-games" made Rebirth feel "pretty bloated" to that writer. The writer is hopeful the content is presented in a more manageable way this time. What the side content is, and how it changes with the character who takes it, is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests.
A story-light demo. LeBlanc's Game Informer headline calls his story-focused Gamescom run "a mediocre demo", while his colleague Eric Van Allen had a better time at the Gold Saucer, and his interview with Hamaguchi left him excited for the finale. Higham, too, found Yuffie a little too much "the bubbly, irreverent anime character" in her Wutai quest while something darker was brewing there.
What did previewers learn from the developers?
Interviews ran alongside the demos. IGN's second preview says the same build gave "wildly different experiences" to different players, and that "the best and most accurate thing I can say about Revelation is that it plays like the third act of a JRPG": free travel over the whole world map is usually saved for an RPG's last hours, and here it arrives in Chapter 4. The demo felt to Game Informer as if "every door in the game was suddenly open," but director Naoki Hamaguchi said "We didn't go for that style": the full game balances hints and options, and "it becomes freer and freer as you go", with the golden path at "about 35 hours" and completionists at "100 or more." He told Inven Global that minigames get difficulty options and "an outright skip feature". The full list of what the team has said is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Developers, and length on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Length and Difficulty.
GameRiot put the takeaway bluntly: battles will feel familiar to anyone who played earlier Final Fantasy games, "if you didn't like Rebirth, this game isn't for you either," but if you loved Rebirth and the first Remake, "this is the pinnacle of the series."
What we think the previews tell us
We think the previews point to a game that is mechanically finished and still being tuned in how it talks to the player. Every complaint we found is about presentation (MAI's timing, markers, tutorials) rather than about combat or the world, and those are the cheapest things to change in the five months before launch. Our count: of the six written and video previews we read in full, five praise the combat or a new party member by name, and three raise MAI, notifications or side-content clutter as their main worry. We expect launch reviews to repeat the clutter complaint unless Square Enix adds an option to mute MAI's calls, which we think is likely given how unanimous the Gamescom reaction was.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Final Fantasy VII Revelation demo I can play?
No. As of Nov 7, 2026, the only demos ran at Gamescom, PAX West and Tokyo Game Show for press and attendees. No public demo has been announced.
What part of the game did the Gamescom demo show?
Chapter 4: Yuffie leads the party (with Barret, Red XIII, Cid and Vincent) toward Wutai, and most of the world is open through the Highwind. Cloud and Tifa are not in the party at that point "for story reasons," IGN said.
What did the Tokyo Game Show demo show?
A special chapter, "The Party Assembles," at level 36: a chase after Sephiroth through the Whirlwind Maze ending in a fight with Jenova. Story details are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Story.
What is the biggest criticism so far?
MAI's interruptions and the number of side activities pushed at the player, raised by IGN, Game Informer and others after Gamescom.
When do reviews come out?
Square Enix has not announced a review embargo as of Nov 7, 2026. The game launches Apr 8, 2027, with early access on Apr 7 for Premium editions (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Editions and Price).

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side QuestsFinal Fantasy VII Revelation's side quests are odd jobs taken from people around the world, all new even in returning regions, and the party member you send changes how a quest's story and gameplay unfold. MAI, Chadley's assistant, announces the world's activities; previews found her notifications intrusive.
