Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second game of Square Enix's remake trilogy, released on PS5 on Feb 29, 2024, then on PC on Jan 23, 2025 and on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on Jun 3, 2026. It leaves Midgar for an open world split into large regions, and IGN's review opens here by calling it "my wildest imagination made manifest" for its combat and world, while finding its new timeline "overly convoluted" in places. It scores 92 on Metacritic for PS5 and won Best Score and Music at The Game Awards 2024, but Square Enix said its early sales were below expectations and has published no number. Final Fantasy VII Revelation, out Apr 8, 2027, picks up straight after Rebirth's ending. The plot itself is on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.

What is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth about?
The premise, kept short: after escaping Midgar at the end of Remake, Cloud and his friends chase Sephiroth across the world. As the Switch 2 and Xbox announcement trailer puts it at this moment, Sephiroth has the Black Materia, "meaning he could destroy the entire planet any minute". The journey runs through the middle of the 1997 game, from Kalm to the Forgotten Capital, and Rebirth's ending is the hinge of the whole trilogy. It is told in full, with spoilers, on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.
Rebirth also gathers most of the party. GameSpot's timeline lists the arrivals here: Vincent Valentine, Cait Sith and Cid Highwind, alongside the hunt for the materia that "will presumably lay the foundations" for the third game. Vincent appeared in Rebirth without being playable (Kotaku, Jun 5, 2026), and Revelation makes both him and Cid full party members (Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Cid Highwind in Final Fantasy VII Revelation).
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gameplay
Rebirth was the trilogy's first open world. IGN's reviewer describes stepping into the Grasslands, "the first of six regions", and being stunned by the scale, then notes the modern open-world conventions, such as towers that reveal tasks on the map. Each region has its own side quests and its own chocobo to unlock. Revelation keeps this design and connects it: the regions become one planet that the party crosses on the Highwind (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Highwind).
Minigames were Rebirth's signature and its most debated feature. IGN calls the Junon parade and the Queen's Blood card game highlights, but says the many diversions front-loaded around a few key plot points can blur "what Cloud and the gang were even supposed to be doing", and names slow crate-moving puzzles and a stealth section among the low points. Queen's Blood returns in Revelation with a new saga led by Red XIII (Queen's Blood in Final Fantasy VII Revelation), and the minigames get difficulty options and a skip (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Minigames).
Combat kept Remake's real-time system with the ATB gauge and Tactical Mode, and added synergy attacks that pair two party members, which Revelation expands to Vincent and Cid. Rebirth has 14 chapters, against Remake's 18, as IGN counted in its Sep 18, 2026 Revelation preview. IGN's reviewer spent more than 80 hours to finish the main story and "a decent chunk" of side content.

Square Enix announced the Switch 2 and Xbox versions on Feb 5, 2026 with this trailer, and cut the PS5 and PC price to $49.99 from Feb 9, 2026. The gap between platforms shrank across the trilogy: Rebirth reached PC 11 months after PS5 and the other consoles 27 months after, while Revelation launches on all four on the same day (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Platforms and File Size). How Rebirth runs on Switch 2 is the best guide to Revelation there, which Final Fantasy VII Revelation Switch 2 covers.
The PS5 launch trailer, posted on Feb 28, 2024, is built around "the reunion, when worlds merge" and the line "The world's ending. That's what everyone's saying", the stakes Revelation inherits.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth reviews and awards
Critics rated Rebirth even higher than Remake. IGN's verdict here calls it "a powerful representation of Final Fantasy 7's most memorable qualities" that "does fumble the execution of its ending" amid its "multiple twisting timelines", but stands out as "thrilling and unexpectedly impactful". Metacritic, as read on Nov 7, 2026:
| Platform | Metacritic |
|---|---|
| PS5 | 92 (151 critics) |
| PC | 90 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 87 |
| Xbox Series X | 84 (4 critics) |
Rebirth led The Game Awards 2024 nominations with seven, tied with Astro Bot, including Game of the Year, and won Best Score and Music. Square Enix counts "over 140 perfect review scores" for Remake and Rebirth together.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sales
Square Enix has never published a sales figure for Rebirth, as of Nov 7, 2026. In its May 2024 results it said Rebirth's sales did not meet expectations, alongside Final Fantasy XVI. Remake, by contrast, announced 3.5 million in its first three days.
Our reading: a company that publishes a number for every hit and none for Rebirth is telling us the number. We think three things explain it: Rebirth launched on PS5 alone, in a smaller console base than Remake's PS4; it is the middle part of a trilogy, which always loses players who skipped part one; and it came out four years after Remake. Square Enix's answers are visible in Revelation's plan: all platforms on day one, a three-game Trilogy Edition at $84.99, and the Switch 2 and Xbox ports of the first two games in 2026. We expect Revelation to outsell Rebirth at launch for those reasons, and our number predictions are on Predictions.
What Revelation changes in Rebirth's world
Rebirth's regions return in Revelation, but changed. In IGN's preview here, Kalm is taking in refugees, the Grasslands that were Rebirth's gentle first zone now hold "hulking evil beasts", and Naoki Hamaguchi says the approaching Meteor has caused seismic shifts that change the land, with every side quest in revisited areas new. A Rebirth save also unlocks the Phoenix summon and a Rebirth weapon skin set in Revelation (Square Enix, Sep 3, 2026). The map is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map.
