Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

Sephiroth is Final Fantasy VII Revelation's antagonist, "nearing godhood" after Rebirth and waiting for Cloud in the Whirlwind Maze at the start of the game; Travis Willingham voices him in English, replacing Tyler Hoechlin, whom director Naoki Hamaguchi said had scheduling conflicts. Story DLC 1 of the Story Expansion Pass is named "Sephiroth".

Sephiroth is the villain of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a former SOLDIER hero who, by the end of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, has killed Aerith and is, in Square Enix's words, "nearing godhood" while Meteor falls (Square Enix, Sep 3, 2026). In English he has a new voice: Travis Willingham replaces Tyler Hoechlin, who voiced him in Remake and Rebirth, because of what Hamaguchi called scheduling conflicts. The Tokyo Game Show demo of Sep 2026 shows the new Sephiroth at work, quietly asking Cloud a question he cannot answer: "Something important. It concerns your number." The first of the game's two story DLCs is named after him (Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC).

Spoiler note: this page names events from the endings of Remake and Rebirth, and, where marked, from the 1997 game's final third.

What has Sephiroth done so far?

In Final Fantasy VII Remake, Sephiroth appears at the Shinra Building, kills President Shinra and draws the party past the Whispers to "the edge of creation". GameSpot's Feb 21, 2024 recap describes the end: he invites Cloud to write a new future with him, disarms him when Cloud refuses, and then spares him, curious what Cloud will do in an uncertain future.

Rebirth widened his plan. IGN's Mar 2, 2024 video on its story changes explains that he still seeks godhood through the Lifestream, but "reunion" now means bringing many worlds together, "a confluence of worlds and emotions". He works through others too: Glenn Lodbrok's push to restart the Wutai war turns out to be Sephiroth's doing, a way to keep Rufus busy while Sephiroth races him to the promised land. Rebirth ends with Sephiroth's sword killing Aerith at the Forgotten Capital (Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far).

What does Sephiroth do in Revelation?

The reveal trailer opens on him: a mountain of robed figures, the "Sephiroth clones" of the original, climbing over each other to reach Sephiroth, who floats above them holding an unconscious Cloud, as Final Fantasy Union's Jun 7, 2026 frame-by-frame breakdown describes it. The narration: "one man sought dominion through reunion. By his will, a star fell."

The second June trailer, the same channel notes, confirms Rufus, Hojo and Sephiroth as returning antagonists, and its Sephiroth and Cloud scene appears to be set in the Whirlwind Maze, where in 1997 Cloud handed over the Black Materia. Kotaku's read is that the scene resembles that moment with the Black Materia apparently removed (Kotaku, Jun 7, 2026); that is press interpretation, not confirmed.

Final Fantasy Union also reports that Hamaguchi, on Maximilian Dood's stream after the reveal, said the title "Revelation" relates specifically to Sephiroth's intent in the story.

What happens with Sephiroth in the TGS demo?

The Tokyo Game Show demo opened with the party in the Whirlwind Maze, "where Sephiroth awaits", and he appears near its end, leading into the fight with Jenova Death (PlayStation Blog, Sep 17, 2026). Curious Corduroy's Sep 17, 2026 video plays English clips of it captured by press at the show.

In the scene at the top of this page, Sephiroth asks Cloud about his SOLDIER number ("Don't tell me you've forgotten, Cloud"), offers to help, then turns away with "How strange. I must have the wrong man." Corduroy's verdict on the new voice: it will "take some getting used to", deep but with "an odd gentleness" that makes Sephiroth sound condescending, which is the point.

After Jenova Death falls, Sephiroth comes to "mess with Cloud again", and Cloud hears Aerith in his head: "Don't let him get to you, Cloud." Spoiler for the demo: the demo then plays a Sephiroth illusion of Nibelheim with Zack in it. "It's just an illusion," one of the party says, "Sephiroth's toying with us," and the answer comes back: "Make that toying with me."

Spoiler for the 1997 game: the number matters because in the original, at the North Crater, Sephiroth tells Cloud he is a failed experiment of Hojo's, never given a number. As Kim Justice's Jan 13, 2023 retrospective recounts, the real Sephiroth had lain in the crater all along, his will calling Jenova, the clones, the Black Materia and Cloud to him; Cloud places the Black Materia in his cocoon, Meteor is cast and the Weapons wake. Revelation opening on the "number" question tells us it is heading for the same revelation, though not necessarily in the same way.

Why was Sephiroth recast?

Tyler Hoechlin, Sephiroth's English voice in Remake and Rebirth, "was unavailable during the production of the third game, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi", who cited "apparent scheduling conflicts" in an interview with the streamer Maximilian Dood (Kotaku, Ethan Gach, Jun 6, 2026). Travis Willingham confirmed on social media that he is "taking up the mantle of Sephiroth in this third installment". Kotaku's headline described fans as "sad and confused".

At the New York Comic Con panel on Oct 8, 2026, Willingham said Sephiroth's appeal comes from balancing menace with restraint, called the Japanese actor "Morikawa-san" (Toshiyuki Morikawa) his "North Star" for the English portrayal, and ended with: "Nothing is more dangerous than a villain that doesn't need to shout to be heard" (Boss Rush Network, Oct 8, 2026).

The rest of the cast welcomed him. In TV Insider's interview at the same event, one member said "I'm just happy Travis is with us", calling it "a beautiful thing" and "long time coming". The full cast list is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Voice Cast.

What is the Sephiroth DLC?

Story DLC 1, "Sephiroth", is one of two story expansions in the Story Expansion Pass, planned "between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028", each also sold separately later (Square Enix, Sep 3, 2026). Square Enix has not said what it covers or whether Sephiroth is playable. Details and creator theories are on Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC.

What we think

We think the Sephiroth DLC is a playable prequel set in his SOLDIER years, before Nibelheim, with Zack beside him. Our reasoning: Rebirth already made Sephiroth briefly playable in its Nibelheim flashback, the Compilation's First Soldier story covers his youth (Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis), and a post-ending DLC about the villain would undercut a finale that Hamaguchi says has one canonical ending. We also expect Square Enix to end the main game with a fight against a form of Sephiroth closer to 1997's winged "Safer Sephiroth" than to anything seen in Remake, since the reveal trailer's opening shot of the stars recalls what the Remake guidebook called the "universe of death", designed, Final Fantasy Union notes, with a silhouette mirroring Safer Sephiroth. Check by: the DLC reveal (Winter 2027) and launch (Apr 8, 2027). More on Predictions.
