Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's side quests are odd jobs taken from people around the world, all new even in returning regions, and the party member you send changes how a quest's story and gameplay unfold. MAI, Chadley's assistant, announces the world's activities; previews found her notifications intrusive.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation's side quests are odd jobs again, as in Rebirth, but with one new rule: depending on which character takes a quest, its story and its gameplay change. The Sep 3, 2026 Deep Dive says the jobs you take from the people you meet teach you their backstories and the regions they live in, and Square Enix's press release of the same day makes the character choice one of the game's headline features. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told IGN that every side quest in the returning regions is new. How many quests there are, and how many choices each has, is not known as of Nov 7, 2026.

Quick facts

Name in game Odd jobs (as in Rebirth)
New in Revelation You choose which party member takes a quest; the story and gameplay change
Example shown Gongaga's youth coalition, taken by Vincent (Deep Dive)
Returning regions Every side quest is new (Hamaguchi to IGN)
Lockouts None: progressing the story does not close side content (Hamaguchi, as relayed)
Guide character MAI, Chadley's assistant, announces activities
Chadley Has his own lab on the Highwind and a bigger role in the main story
Quest count Not announced as of Nov 7, 2026

How do side quests work in Revelation?

You pick who takes the job. The Deep Dive says it plainly: "Depending on which character undertakes a quest, the story and gameplay will change", and as those changes pile up they "create narrative experiences unique to each player". Odd jobs also let the party reflect on their pasts, their futures and their reasons to fight.

The example is in Gongaga, where Malboros have overrun the jungle and the village's youth coalition has gone out to fight them. With Vincent chosen, the quest "will unfold from his perspective": he suggests going on foot, and Cissnei, the former Turk from the Compilation, leads him to a vantage point to spot the teams' smoke signals. Square Enix stops there. Game Informer adds that Cissnei reacts differently when working with Vincent than with Yuffie, and Kotaku notes that cutscenes play from the point of view of whichever character you control.

We think this is the biggest change to side content in the trilogy, and the one that will decide whether Revelation's odd jobs feel less like Rebirth's checklist: a quest you play once with Vincent and once with Yuffie is two different scenes, not one errand done twice. We expect guides at launch to list the variants per character, and we will add them here.

Are the side quests new in old regions?

Yes. Hamaguchi told IGN that Meteor's seismic shifts changed familiar places and that all of the side quests in those areas are new too. The same preview is honest about the cost: on landing in the Grasslands, IGN's reviewer was met with about a dozen pings leading to side objectives, which brought back the "checklisty" feeling of Rebirth.

GameRiot's demo footage from Sep 10, 2026 shows one of those new jobs: a chocobo named Coconut has run off because she has fallen for another bird, and the party agrees to help before she moves away and loses her chance. Later in the footage comes a fight, and then the party takes Coconut home.

Is the side content tied to the story?

Hamaguchi says so. In Curious Corduroy's Sep 11, 2026 roundup, he reads out Hamaguchi's answer to Game Informer: the game takes place days before the final battle, the characters are each searching for their reason to fight, and so the side stories are "not just random things". Game Informer quotes the same line, "It's not just some random side task", and says the content reflects the coming apocalypse.

One report goes further. Curious Corduroy relays a reading of a Japanese article on jpgames.de that each character gets a sequence before the final battle showing what they feel, and that how much side content you did for that character shapes it. Square Enix has not said this in its own material; treat it as a report until it does.

MAI and the world intel

MAI is the part of the side content previews liked least. IGN's Michael Higham says Chadley's assistant would call him constantly about new optional activities, stopping him in his tracks right after he landed in Wutai, then fill the map with markers and the corner of the screen with objectives. He counted maybe 10 to 15 minutes of notifications, pop-ups and tutorials in his hour, though he notes many of those are tutorials a full playthrough would have shown earlier. Game Informer called her "terribly intrusive".

Higham's overall worry is the same: that Revelation may be stuffing its world with side content "for the sake of it" to the point of interrupting the flow, though he allows that an hour-long demo may have crammed it in.

Chadley himself steps back from the open world. In GameSpot's Oct 5, 2026 interview, Hamaguchi says Chadley has his own compartment on the Highwind, a lab where he researches Meteor, and admits some players felt there was too much of him in Rebirth. At the end of the same interview he says Chadley will play a rather important role in the plot this time. Game Informer's preview says he is busy tracking the Weapons, so he appears less in the world.

We think MAI's volume will be the first thing patched or toned down if launch reviews repeat the preview complaints, and the icon toggle Hamaguchi mentioned (on Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map) is the first half of that fix already.

Can you miss side quests?

Not by moving on, according to Hamaguchi. Curious Corduroy relays his answer to Wccftech: asked whether side content gets locked out once the story passes a certain point, Hamaguchi said no, because he dislikes games that do that. You will not be forced into a side quest, nor shut out of one for progressing too far.

Frequently asked questions

Does Revelation have side quests?

Yes: odd jobs across every region, all new in the returning ones, plus combat assignments, Queen's Blood opponents and Gold Saucer activities.

Does the character I choose really change a quest?

Square Enix says the story and gameplay change, and the Deep Dive shows Vincent's version of a Gongaga quest. How large the differences are across a whole quest has not been shown.

Can I turn MAI off?

No setting to silence her has been announced as of Nov 7, 2026. Hamaguchi has said the map icons on the Highwind can be switched off.

Do side quests affect the ending?

Not known. Hamaguchi has said the side stories are tied to each character's reason to fight; a report of per-character scenes before the final battle is unconfirmed.
