Final Fantasy VII Revelation Story
Final Fantasy VII Revelation tells the last part of the remade Final Fantasy VII story, in which Cloud's party, grieving a friend and flying the Highwind, races to stop Meteor and a Sephiroth "nearing godhood" while the planet's Weapons attack everyone. As of Nov 7, 2026 Square Enix has shown the opening hours and an early chapter in Wutai, not the ending.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the final part of Square Enix's three-game retelling of Final Fantasy VII: Cloud and his companions, grieving a beloved ally, fly the airship Highwind across the whole planet in a race to stop Meteor and a Sephiroth who is nearing godhood, while the planet's own guardians, the Weapons, rise against everyone. The reveal trailer's narrator sums up the setup in one line: "one man sought dominion through reunion. By his will, a star fell." Square Enix's tagline is "The final battle has begun. Everything leads here." As of Nov 7, 2026, the company has shown the opening of the game and an early open-world chapter, and nothing of the ending. The game comes out on Apr 8, 2027 (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Release Date).
Spoiler note: this page names events from the end of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and, in the section marked for it, the final third of the 1997 Final Fantasy VII. The full plot of the first two games is on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.

What is the story of Final Fantasy VII Revelation?
Meteor hangs in the sky, called down by Sephiroth, and the planet has answered by waking the Weapons, "monstrous planetary guardians" that do not tell friend from foe (RPG Site, Jun 7, 2026). In The Planet's Crisis trailer from Gamescom, a public address tells the people they are "assailed on every side" by the meteor and by Weapons, one of which "made landfall outside Midgar". The trailer does not name the speaker. Square Enix's own summary adds that war is spreading: tensions between Wutai and Shinra are "at a fever pitch".
The party's goal is stated plainly in the Release Date trailer: "All of us are here for one reason. Kill Sephiroth and stop that meteor." The same trailer gives each companion a motive in their own voice: Yuffie left Wutai "to rid the world of the shadow of Sephiroth", Red XIII fights as "all the Watchers before me" did, and Barret will fight a Weapon if it endangers his daughter Marlene. Each character's role is on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Characters.
Where does Revelation start?
Rebirth ended at the Forgotten Capital, where Sephiroth struck Aerith down, and with the party setting out after him; the full recap covers how it got there. Revelation picks up that chase.
The Tokyo Game Show demo of Sep 2026 opened in the Whirlwind Maze, the path into the North Crater, with the party at level 36 and Sephiroth waiting at the end (PlayStation Blog, Sep 17, 2026). Square Enix titled the demo "The Party Assembles". RPGFan called it a special chapter (RPGFan, Sep 21, 2026), while Curious Corduroy's Sep 17, 2026 video, which plays press footage from the show, describes it as part of Chapter 1. In that footage Sephiroth asks Cloud about his SOLDIER number, "Don't tell me you've forgotten, Cloud", and Cloud cannot answer. The demo then moved to the fight with Jenova Death (named "Jenova Deathmourner" in one part of the PlayStation Blog report; see Final Fantasy VII Revelation Enemies and Bosses).
Spoiler for the TGS demo: after Jenova, the demo plays a Sephiroth illusion of Nibelheim in which Zack is present. In the English clip Curious Corduroy shows, Cloud tells Barret he and Zack "made First Class together" and that Zack died "on our expedition 5 years ago", and admits he had forgotten him until recently. This is a scene the 1997 game kept for much later (see below), which suggests Revelation spreads the truth about Cloud's past across the journey rather than revealing it in one place.
What happens in Chapter 4?
The Gamescom press demo began in Chapter 4, with Yuffie and the others heading for Wutai and Cloud and Tifa out of the party. IGN's Michael Higham found Yuffie "essentially being the main character in this chapter", in a story of ninjas defecting and Shinra agents operating in her hometown. He saw Yuffie's father Godo meet Glenn Lodbrok, the hooded figure from Rebirth, and learned Glenn's past as a Wutai operative leading an elite squad.
IGN's second preview says the game "plays like the third act of a JRPG": in Chapter 4 the party of Yuffie, Barret, Nanaki (Red XIII), Cid and Vincent can already go anywhere on the world map, something usually saved for an RPG's final hours. For scale, Rebirth had 14 chapters and Remake 18. IGN also reports that Cloud and Tifa are absent "for story reasons", and Kotaku's read of the reveal trailer saw Tifa and Cid leading the party near the North Crater while Cloud was away (Kotaku, Jun 7, 2026). That is press interpretation of trailer footage, not a stated plot point.
Final Fantasy Union's Jun 7, 2026 frame-by-frame breakdown makes the link to 1997 explicit: in the original, Cloud was unavailable while recovering in Mideel, Tifa first led the party and Cid took over when she went to Cloud. Seeing Tifa and Cid together with no Cloud, the channel reasons the shot sits early in that stretch. The Mideel Archipelago is one of Revelation's new regions (Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map).
What is the theme of Revelation?
"The central theme of this title is resolve," Naoki Hamaguchi said when he revealed the game at Summer Game Fest on Jun 5, 2026: Cloud and his companions "each confront their own destinies and find the resolve to march toward the final battle". He tied it to the team too, describing his own resolve "to see the series through to its very end". Producer Yoshinori Kitase called the series "finally reaching its climactic finale" (RPG Site, Jun 5, 2026).
The Gameplay Introduction frames the whole game as "the epic conclusion of the REMAKE Series", with Meteor looming over every region as "a constant reminder of your mission". It closes on the series' motto for this part: "stand together. One last time."
Does Revelation change the original story?
Square Enix and its staff have said three things about how Revelation treats the 1997 plot:
- Nothing is cut. "We never had the mindset of condensing the original," Hamaguchi told Inven; the team chose to include "all parts and expanding them even further" (Inven Global, Sep 10, 2026).
- Some events move. Rocket Town, which the 1997 game visits in the part Rebirth covered, was deliberately moved into Revelation, Hamaguchi said in a Gamescom interview shown in Curious Corduroy's Aug 28, 2026 video, and Wutai is now a nation in a hostile standoff with Shinra. Cid's side of that is on Cid Highwind in Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
- Zack matters more. There are "substantially more segments where you play as Zack", Hamaguchi told Inven. The Compilation's characters and lore are folded in too: Cissnei appears (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Characters), and he would neither confirm nor deny Deepground (Compilation of Final Fantasy VII).
Final Fantasy Union reports, from a Japanese interview with Hamaguchi, that Zack reappears at "specific moments in the story", that other guest characters join as playable, and that Revelation will have one definitive canonical ending rather than several. It adds that choices in side content can change parts of the story and lock out other sequences. The official Deep Dive confirms the last part in general terms: depending on which character takes a quest, "the story and gameplay will change" (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests).
What happened in the final third of Final Fantasy VII (1997)?
Spoilers for the 1997 Final Fantasy VII follow. This is the stretch Revelation remakes, as the original told it. How much of it Revelation keeps is not known.
At the North Crater, Sephiroth shows Cloud an illusion of Nibelheim with a black-haired SOLDIER (Zack) where Cloud remembered himself, and tells him he is a failed experiment of Hojo's, made after the Nibelheim incident and never given a number, as Kim Justice's Jan 13, 2023 retrospective of the original recounts. The TGS demo's question about Cloud's number is that same thread, moved to the start of Revelation.
Cloud, no longer himself, hands Sephiroth the Black Materia. Meteor is summoned and the Weapons wake; Kim Justice lists Sapphire, Diamond, Ultima, Ruby and Emerald.
The party wakes in Junon with Cloud missing and Rufus planning to execute Tifa and Barret on television. The escape (Scarlet's slap fight with Tifa, Sapphire Weapon's attack, the Highwind's rescue) puts the airship in the party's hands. From there the 1997 game ran through Cloud's recovery at Mideel, the race for the Huge Materia, Diamond Weapon's attack on Midgar, Hojo at the Sister Ray, and the descent into the North Crater for the final fights. In the original, Rocket Town and Wutai came earlier, before Aerith's death; Revelation has moved Rocket Town into this last part. The Tifa and Scarlet slap scene is confirmed for Revelation, as a minigame (Inven Global, Sep 10, 2026). The original's history is on Final Fantasy VII (1997) and the Weapons on Final Fantasy VII Revelation Weapons.
What is not known yet?
As of Nov 7, 2026:
| Question | What is known |
|---|---|
| How it ends | Nothing shown. One canonical ending, as Final Fantasy Union reports Hamaguchi said |
| Aerith's role | Her voice reaches Cloud in the TGS demo; whether she is one of the eight playable members is not stated |
| Zack's role | More playable segments (Inven); present in the Nibelheim illusion |
| Number of chapters | Not announced; Chapter 4 is still "relatively early" (IGN) |
| Story DLC | "Sephiroth" and "Vincent & the Turks", Winter 2027 to Spring 2028 (Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC) |
| Deepground | Neither confirmed nor denied |
What we think
We think Revelation keeps the 1997 game's main beats, including Cloud's collapse and recovery, but that the multiverse Rebirth opened (the worlds where Zack lives) is resolved in its final chapters, not left open. We base that on Hamaguchi's single canonical ending and on Zack's larger part. We also expect the ending to stop short of a clean "Aerith returns" reunion: Rebirth kept her death, and a trilogy built on a "promise fulfilled" line in its reveal trailer reads to us as an ending about keeping a promise, not undoing a loss. Both can be checked on Apr 8, 2027. More of our calls are on Predictions.
Frequently asked questions
Is Final Fantasy VII Revelation the last game?
Yes. Square Enix calls it the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, and Kitase called it the series' "climactic finale". Two story DLCs follow it (Final Fantasy VII Revelation DLC).
Do I need to play Remake and Rebirth first?
The story continues directly from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, so playing both or reading Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far helps a great deal. The cheapest ways in are on Final Fantasy VII Games in Order.
Does Aerith come back in Revelation?
Not announced. Rebirth kept her death, and in the TGS demo footage Curious Corduroy shows, her voice reaches Cloud after the Jenova fight, telling him not to let Sephiroth get to him. Whether she is playable or returns in some other way is not known.
Is Zack in Final Fantasy VII Revelation?
Yes. He appears in the Nibelheim scenes of the TGS demo, and Hamaguchi said there are "substantially more segments" where you play as him. Caleb Pierce voices him (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Voice Cast).
Is Revelation's story the same as the original's?
It follows the original's final third but moves some events (Rocket Town), expands others (Wutai, Vincent, Zack) and keeps the remake series' changes, such as the Whispers and parallel worlds.
