Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake, the first part of the remake trilogy, came out on PS4 on Apr 10, 2020; its PS5 version Intergrade (Jun 10, 2021) adds Yuffie's INTERmission episode and later reached PC, Switch 2 and Xbox. It has sold more than 7 million copies.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first game of Square Enix's remake trilogy, released on PS4 on Apr 10, 2020. It retells only the Midgar opening of the 1997 original, with real-time combat in place of turn-based battles, which IGN's review calls at this moment "more like a complete reinvention" than a faithful modernization. Its PS5 version, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (Jun 10, 2021), adds the INTERmission episode starring Yuffie and is the version sold today, on PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. Square Enix announced more than 7 million copies across both versions in Sep 2023. Final Fantasy VII Revelation, out Apr 8, 2027, concludes the story Remake began. This page covers the release, gameplay, reception and sales; the plot is on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.

What is Final Fantasy VII Remake about?

The premise, without spoilers: in the city of Midgar, the Shinra Electric Power Company drains the planet's life energy through its reactors. Cloud Strife, a former elite SOLDIER working as a mercenary, joins the rebel group Avalanche to blow up a reactor, and in the aftermath meets the flower seller Aerith and reunites with his childhood friend Tifa. PlayStation's official recap introduces that setup here. What follows, and how Remake's ending changes the course of the original story, is on Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth Story So Far.

The scope is the striking choice. GameSpot's timeline explains that Remake "ostensibly retells everything that happened during the Midgar section" of the original, a few hours of the 1997 game, while switching up details and "vastly" expanding the story. It also starts a new strand of the timeline, which is why the trilogy is not a plain retelling.

Final Fantasy VII Remake gameplay

Combat is real time with a strategic layer. In IGN's description here, basic attacks fill each character's ATB bars, which you spend on weapon abilities, spells and items chosen from a slowed-down menu; filling an enemy's stagger gauge makes it take extra damage, and each enemy staggers differently. Boss fights run in several phases with cutscenes woven in. This is the system Rebirth extended with synergy attacks and Revelation "perfects", in Square Enix's word (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Combat).

Remake is built in chapters: 18 of them, against Rebirth's 14, as IGN notes in its Revelation preview at this moment. Midgar is a series of linear areas with hub districts in the slums, not an open world; the open regions arrived with Rebirth, and Revelation adds the whole planet (Final Fantasy VII Revelation World Map).

Side quests are where Remake was weakest. IGN's reviewer calls the odd jobs in Midgar's slums "bottom-of-the-barrel JRPG tropes", such as a shopkeeper's rat problem and a girl's lost cats, while noting that skipping them costs valuable items and can subtly change later scenes. That last point grew into one of Revelation's systems: who takes a quest now changes how it plays out (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Side Quests).

Intergrade and INTERmission

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, announced on Feb 25, 2021, is the PS5 version: improved graphics and a new episode, INTERmission. In its trailer, at this moment, Yuffie Kisaragi introduces herself as a materia hunter and agent of Wutai who has just arrived in Midgar. INTERmission is Yuffie's own side story, set during Remake's events, and the reason she can join the party in Rebirth already known to players. Wutai, her home, is a major region in Revelation (Wutai).

Every release of Remake, as of Nov 7, 2026:

Version Platform Release Source
Final Fantasy VII Remake PS4 Apr 10, 2020 Square Enix
Intergrade PS5 Jun 10, 2021 Gematsu, Jun 2022
Intergrade PC, Epic Games Store Dec 16, 2021 Gematsu, Jun 2022
Intergrade PC, Steam (Steam Deck compatible) Jun 17, 2022 Gematsu, Jun 2022
Intergrade Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store Jan 22, 2026 RPG Site

The Switch 2 and Xbox launch trailer of Jan 22, 2026 is built from lines about Sephiroth ("Sephiroth has to be stopped. No holding back.") and closes on "I'm waiting, Cloud", the thread the whole trilogy pulls on. That release put the first part of the trilogy on Nintendo's and Microsoft's consoles for the first time, a step toward Revelation launching on all four platforms on the same day (Final Fantasy VII Revelation Platforms and File Size).

We think Intergrade is the version to buy on any platform: it is the only one still sold new, it includes INTERmission, and Rebirth assumes you have seen Yuffie's episode. The Remake Intergrade and Rebirth Twin Pack, at $59.99, also adds "Streamlined Progression" (unlimited HP and MP and an always-full ATB gauge) for players who want the story fast before Revelation (Square Enix, Sep 3, 2026).

Final Fantasy VII Remake reviews

Reviews were strong, with reservations about pacing and the new plot. IGN's verdict here praises the combat and enemy variety and the "previously hidden humanity" of Midgar, and faults "dull RPG filler" and "convoluted new plot points", while calling it a great RPG in its own right. Metacritic's scores, as read on Nov 7, 2026:

Version Metacritic
Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4) 87
Intergrade (PS5) 89
Intergrade (Switch 2) 89
Intergrade (Xbox Series X) 88
Intergrade (PC) 86

Square Enix says Remake and Rebirth together have earned "over 140 perfect review scores".

Final Fantasy VII Remake sales

Square Enix has published three milestones, all counting shipments plus digital sales:

Date announced Copies What it counts Source
Apr 2020 3.5 million First 3 days, PS4 Square Enix
Aug 7, 2020 5 million PS4, including 2 million digital Square Enix
Sep 14, 2023 7 million PS4, plus Intergrade on PS5 and PC Gematsu, Sep 2023

Our reading of these numbers: the first 5 million took about four months, the next 2 million more than three years, and those three years included the PS5 and PC versions. Remake sold mostly at launch. No figure has been given since Sep 2023, so the Switch 2 and Xbox releases of Jan 2026 are not counted anywhere. We think Square Enix's next Remake number, if one comes, will be a combined trilogy figure around Revelation's launch rather than a Remake figure on its own (Predictions).
